Master of Medicine Residency Programme
A structured postgraduate medical training pathway to develop specialist doctors for Somalia and the region through supervised clinical practice, academic teaching and locally relevant research.
Academic owner: Faculty of Medicine, Mogadishu University, Postgraduate and Research Programme.
Clinical training platform: Mogadishu Health Cluster supports clinical-site coordination, training-site administration and supervised hospital-based residency exposure.
Overview
A pathway from general practice to specialist medicine
The Mogadishu University MMed residency programme responds to the need for locally trained specialists, stronger teaching hospitals, improved clinical supervision and a predictable pathway for doctors moving from general medical practice into specialist practice.
The programme combines university-based academic governance with supervised clinical exposure in approved affiliated hospitals and clinical departments. Training is expected to include teaching sessions, departmental seminars, case presentations, journal clubs, supervised ward and clinic practice, emergency exposure, theatre or diagnostic-unit exposure where relevant, logbooks, assessments and a supervised research dissertation.
The portfolio below describes the proposed first phase. Final admission arrangements, approved intake numbers, fees and training-site details will be communicated through official Mogadishu University admission notices.

Research and progression
Clinical competence and meaningful research
Each resident is expected to complete a supervised dissertation addressing a relevant clinical, service, health-system or specialty problem. The pathway includes proposal development, ethics preparation, data collection, analysis, dissertation writing, presentation and oral defence.
Research should be locally useful, feasible within the residency period and aligned with Faculty and departmental supervision capacity. Audit, quality improvement and clinical research should strengthen hospital services as well as support academic progression.
Assessment
Four broad components are planned, subject to final university approval and departmental regulations:
- Continuous assessment: Seminars, case presentations, assignments, journal clubs, audit or quality-improvement work and attendance.
- Clinical or practical assessment: Observed clinical encounters, logbook review, procedure assessment, reporting performance and supervisor evaluation.
- Written examinations: Short-answer, essay, MCQ, EMQ or structured written papers according to departmental policy.
- Research dissertation: Proposal approval, implementation, written dissertation, presentation and oral defence.
Progression requirements
- Satisfactory attendance and participation in clinical duties and structured teaching.
- Completion of required rotation assessments, logbook entries and supervisor evaluations.
- Passing departmental written, clinical, practical and oral assessments according to university regulations.
- Approval and completion of the dissertation before final award.
